Artist and writer John Rose imagined a better Congress in his 2023 illustrated Capitol Hill Christmas Carol, "If You Give the House a Cookie." In the whimsical tale, a Congressman lacks enough votes to become Speaker-of-the-House. After eating a magic cookie he is visited by ghosts of the Founding Fathers. Having a tranformative change of heart he abandons partisan politics and become a Constitutional Patriot. He is elected with a bipartisan majority and we all live happily every after.
Tragically, Kevin McCarthy failed to rise to the occasion enjoying a short reign as “Squeaker,” but there is always hope for the next candidate finding common ground for a bipartisan majority and leading for the good of the people.
Protesting big money in elections, Rose promotes Liberty Cookies and patriotic merchandise instead of spamming for donations. Rose said, "I believe in capitalism and the American dream; aggressive panhandling by politicians is distasteful. I'd like Americans to buy our delicious cookies instead of subsidizing billionaire media oligarchs with overpriced political ads. We deserve more than crumbs for a change."
Rose advocates reinstating bipartisan campaign finance reforms with a new Constitutional Amendment. "Money is not speech and corporations are not people," Rose said channeling the ghost of Senator John McCain (R). "
The Supreme Court's 5-4 Citizens United decision overturned 100 years of election spending restrictions and unleashed unlimited spending on elections. It was their worst decision ever according to McCain in 2012."
Rose promotes reforming the Senate silent filibuster requiring debate on proposed legislation before a vote. "It is undemocratic for an anonymous Senator to block a vote on popular legislation," Rose said. "Politicians must stand up for their beliefs and justify their positions to the American people and voters."
Rose also encourages Americans to bake and give cookies to their neighbors as a friendly way to build community, register new voters, and find common ground and shared values. "Liberty Cookies also pays commissions door-to-door or on social media. Getting voters to the ballots is hard work and activists deserve to be paid for their efforts. Freedom is not free, and America was founded on capitalism not charity." Rose believes that time spent voting should be paid just like serving on juries. "If Secretaries of State had to pay voters for the time spent waiting in line, they would make sure to make voting quick and easy."
